Former B&M transformed into International supermarket with food from across globe

A new supermarket serving food from across the globe has opened on London Road.

Taza Supermarket opened its doors this week in a building that was previously home to B&M. Located at 145-163 London Road, in the Islington area of Liverpool, the 16,000 square feet building has lain empty since B&M closed back in January 2020.

But it has now been given a new lease of life with the opening of Taza Supermarket, which specialises in Turkish, Asian, Middle Eastern and Eastern European food as well as Halal meat.

Director Ahmed Rasool, originally from Kurdistan, north of Iraq, opened his first business, Marmaris, further down London Road back in 2012. Ahmed said Taza Supermarket was a good opportunity to expand the business and provide a bigger variety of food from around the world.

Ahmed, 47, said: "We own Marmaris further down [the road] and we had an opportunity to expand, so we came to the decision to look for somewhere so we can have more space to bring more international food, because our customers at Marmaris is mixed.

"We have all nationalities coming into the store and they were looking for different types of food. They kept asking for more spice and every type of food, so we thought there was an opportunity for us to get a bigger store and hire more people to work.

"We believe this part of London Road is part of the city centre - it will eventually become the city centre. We are expecting the city centre to grow because Liverpool is getting really big and mixed with different nationalities.

"We are delighted that we have also been able to redevelop the property, as it is a real boost to the area to have incoming investment. We look forward to becoming a part of the London Road retail community.”

Fellow Director of Taza Supermarket Zardashi Kadir added: ‘Retail of any kind is a very challenging sector of the economy right now, and so you have to bring something a little bit different to attract the attention of consumers, who are already well-provided for in terms of well-known, nationally branded outlets.

"Taza Supermarket has its own unique profile, which is all about attracting customers who want to add to their retail experience. Liverpool has such a diverse community, and customers who are always on the lookout for something that offers them a much wider range of choices.

"We will be providing the highest quality produce across our ranges, and our independent nature means we will be able to get to know our customers well, and react quickly to their feedback, wants and suggestions.

"We are really proud to be offering job opportunities, which is always welcomed in any local economy, and being a part of this iconic shopping district.”
