A group of over 60 former Democratic and Republican attorneys general have penned a letter to Senate leaders advocating for the confirmation of Pam Bondi as the head of the Department of Justice. They highlighted Bondi's extensive prosecutorial experience, particularly during her tenure as Florida's attorney general for eight years, as a key qualification for the position.
The letter, signed by more than 20 Democratic attorneys general or those appointed by Democratic governors, commended Bondi's bipartisan work both in Florida and as a state prosecutor in Hillsborough County over 18 years.
The former attorneys general emphasized their direct experience working with Bondi and attested to her fitness for the role, citing her commitment to public service and prosecutorial expertise.
Bondi's dedication to public safety and upholding the rule of law in Florida, including efforts to combat violent crime, protect consumers, and address the opioid crisis, was lauded in the letter.
The signatories described Bondi as a respected member of the State Attorney General community and expressed confidence in her ability to serve effectively as the United States Attorney General.
The letter coincided with the announcement of the official dates for Bondi's confirmation hearing by the Senate Judiciary Committee, with expectations of confirmation in the Republican-majority chamber. Earlier endorsements from a group of over 100 former Justice Department officials further supported Bondi's confirmation.
However, recent reservations were voiced by Sen. Dick Durbin, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, following his meeting with Bondi. Durbin raised concerns about Bondi's past defense of President-elect Donald Trump during impeachment proceedings and the 2020 election, questioning her ability to uphold the rule of law independently.
Despite differing opinions, the support for Bondi's confirmation from a significant number of former attorneys general underscores the ongoing debate surrounding her nomination for the role of Attorney General of the United States.
