Former Atletico Madrid star aims dig at Peter Schmeichel ahead of Man United reunion

Former Atletico Madrid attacker Paulo Futre has aimed a dig at ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel as the two clubs lock horns for the first in more than 30 years.

Futre scored a brace in their 3-0 win over Sir Alex Ferguson's side in the European Cup Winners' Cup first leg, before a draw in the return leg at Old Trafford saw United's defence of the honour come crashing down.

Futre, now 55, opened the scoring shortly after half an hour before inflicting further damage with the first of a two-goal flurry in the final moments of normal time.

United stopper Schmeichel didn't cover himself in glory for Futre's first goal as he burst forward faking a cut-back leaving the Dane wrong-footed and the goal at the Portuguese international's mercy.

And he has aimed a quip at Schmeichel after he claimed in his autobiography that he'd slipped.

"Robson, Hughes, the goalkeeper Schmeichel, Pallister, Ince … they had a great team. They didn’t know much about me, though, and that night the devil was Portuguese," he told i news.

"He comes out a bit and he’s left me the space for a split-second.

"It was perfect. If I’d put it any closer across, he’d have stopped it. It was a different goal.

"He didn’t know me. If he’d seen my games, he’d have known I was a player who could do anything. If he’d known the Portuguese wasn’t an ordinary player but a top player would have seen it coming."
