A former Anglican priest has been extradited to Tasmania over a historical sexual abuse charge.

Louis Daniels, 74, was arrested in the ACT and arrived at Hobart Airport on Thursday evening.

He appeared in an out-of-hours session at the Hobart Magistrates Court, charged with one count of persistent sexual abuse of a child.

Police said the charges related to crimes allegedly committed in the 1980s, when Daniels lived in the state.

They said the investigation into Daniels had been long and complex after a complaint was lodged following the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Detective Inspector Michael Smith said the investigation was "one of many historical sexual assault investigations" undertaken by police.

Daniels was remanded in custody and will appear in court on Friday.
