Nick Saban’s sudden retirement rattled the college football world on Wednesday, and the decision evoked an interesting and amusing take from one of the Alabama coach’s former stars.
The possibly ominous reaction came from Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey, a Crimson Tide player from 2014 to ’16. With questions starting to swell regarding Saban’s departure, Humphrey kept it straight-forward as he shared what he would do, and what could happen, in response to Saban’s departure.
“I would have been in that portal so fast after I heard Saban retiring lol,” Humphrey, who won a national title with Saban in ’15, wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
As a player who played prior in the pre-transfer portal era (2018), Humphrey’s post could be a simple joke from an ex-program standout feeling nostalgic. On the flip side, the hypothetical resolution could also represent the thinking of potentially more than a few Tide players as the program searches for Saban’s successor.

Given how intense the fanbase is, though, Humphrey may want to consider following up later with a more congratulatory post on the coach’s retirement in case the thought of a mass exodus becomes a concern for the Tide faithful.
