Former AFL high-flyer Liam Jurrah will remain in custody while he awaits a preliminary examination in court next month after he allegedly broke into a house in Central Australia and assaulted a woman with a machete.
His matter returned to the Alice Springs Local Court this morning but was swiftly adjourned after the court heard he had changed lawyers, causing a delay of several weeks.
The 34-year-old is facing charges of aggravated assault and unlawful entry in relation to an incident on August 2 in his home community of Yuendumu, 330 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs.
At the time of the incident the remote community had been ensnared in an extended period of unrest.
Additional police were sent to help respond to family feuding and violent reprisal attacks.
The embattled ex-Demons player, who retired from the AFL a decade ago, was refused bail when he appeared in Alice Springs Local Court on August 30.
The dynamic forward played 36 games over four seasons, booting 81 goals for Melbourne before being delisted in 2012 amid legal troubles.
The Warlpiri man was the first footballer from a remote Central Australian community to play in the AFL.
