Foreign Office travel warning for holidaymakers heading for France

Tourists heading for a French getaway next week are being advised to contact their travel operator for advice ahead of strike actions and demonstrations across the country.

Last week (January 19) saw widespread travel chaos as more than one million people took part in strikes, marches and demonstrations. The transport sector, schools and refineries were hit by the mass walkout, which was dubbed “Black Thursday”.

The action was in response to the French government’s plans to raise the retirement age and further dates are planned. At the moment, workers are poised to walk out in protest again on January 31.

This latest strike is not expected to be the last. Instead, travel experts expect that the disruption will last throughout February and possibly into March, threatening half-term getaways for many families.

Some French trade unions, including the union representing ski list operators at ski resorts across the French Alps, have issued an “unlimited” strike notice. While bosses have said that they do not expect to strike past January 31, there is a possibility that unions will announce further dates, including across the half-term holidays.

The Foreign Office has warned British travellers to check the latest advice with travel operators if they are due to travel to, from or be in France on the 31st. If in the country, holidaymakers are advised to avoid demonstrations and follow the advice of the local authorities.

Gov.uk advice to travellers reads: "Several unions have called for cross-sector strike action and demonstrations on Tuesday 31 January. This may lead to disruption to services. Please check the latest advice with operators before travelling, avoid demonstrations and follow the advice of local authorities."

If your travel plans are disrupted due to the strike, including if your holiday is cancelled, you may be entitled to compensation. Your travel agent or operator will be best placed to advise you if this is the case.
