Foreign Office issues warning and advice to Brits travelling to France over school holidays

Brits heading to France when England's school holidays start are being warned to expect delays.

The school year ends in England on Friday July 22, sparking the start of six weeks of holiday and the peak travel period for families. Many will be packing their cars up, heading down to Kent and boarding ferries to France for holidays on the Continent, as well as flying and taking trains or using the Channel Tunnel's Eurotunnel.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office says to expect delays due to increased travel and further disruption due to industrial action, including airline strikes later in July. EasyJet and Ryanair are among the airlines whose staff plan to strike. Local disputes in the transport sector are also possible.

The FCO says: "The coming weeks are likely to see an increase in traffic between the UK and France on trains, planes, ferries and the Channel Tunnel, which could lead to delays at certain times. Industrial action in France and resource constraints of travel operators could also cause further disruption.

"Before travelling, you should check for the latest information with your travel operator or airline, including their advice on how early you should arrive at the terminal or airport to check in. Where possible, you should make sure you have a confirmed booking before you travel and ensure you are fully prepared for your trip, including for the possibility of delays, with enough food and water."

Be aware of France's Covid-19 entry rules. As of July 20, 2022, arrivals from the UK into France aged over 12 who are not fully vaccinated or have not recovered from Covid-19 in the previous six months must provide a negative PCR Covid-10 test result, taken within 72 hours or an antigen test result, taken within 48 hours pre-departure.
