Foreign Office issues Portugal travel update ahead of May half term

Brits heading to Portugal this May half term have been warned that they could face “travel disruption” due to strike action by Portuguese immigration officers. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (the FCDO) has updated its travel guidance for the country.

Between May 22 and June 26 Portuguese immigration officers are planning industrial action. Holidaymakers are advised to allow extra time to pass through border control when they enter and leave Portugal.

It comes as many schools break up for May half term on Friday. Meanwhile lots of families will be looking to get away and make the most of the bank holiday on Monday.

The FCDO said: “Industrial action by Portuguese immigration officers between 22 May and 26 June may cause travel disruption. “If you are travelling during this period, allow additional time to clear border control when entering and exiting Portugal. You should consult your airline or tour operator for updates prior to travel.”

Jet2 has also warned its passengers of longer waits at Portuguese border control. In a statement on its website the airline said: “Due to an Immigration Strike affecting Portugal, there may be longer queues at Border Control upon arrival on the Monday 29th May 2023. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
