Ford v Ferrari races onto Netflix's Global Top 10 chart five years after its release. Directed by James Mangold, the 2019 film follows the automotive engineer Carrol Shelby and British driver Ken Miles who are hired to build a Ford supercar capable of defeating the perennially dominant Ferrari racing team at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. Matt Damon and Christian Bale lead the Ford v Ferrari cast alongside Jon Bernthal, Caitríona Balfe, Tracy Letts, Josh Lucas, Noah Jupe, Remo Girone, and Ray McKinnon.
Now, five years after its release, Matt Damon and Christian Bale's motoring movie has raced onto Netflix's Global Top 10 chart. For the week of March 11-17, Ford v Ferrari was watched for 8.3 million hours and received 3.3 million total views, ranking eighth and marking its first week in the Global Top 10. In terms of total views, Ford v Ferrari tied with the seventh-place title, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is enjoying its whopping 13th straight week in the Top 10.
At the time of its release, Ford v Ferrari reviews were overwhelmingly positive, praising the film's performances (particularly Damon and Bale) and especially its technical aspects, including its nimble editing, immersive sound design, and thrilling racing sequences. While the movie delivers all the automotive action that audiences would expect, many reviews also recognized that it also contains some compelling human drama. As a result, Ford v Ferrari has a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score, the second highest of James Mangold's career next to Logan (93%).
Ford v Ferrari was also nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Sound Mixing, winning two Oscars for Film Editing and Sound Editing.
Ford v Ferrari was also a considerable commercial success that grossed $225 at the worldwide box office, more than doubling its $97 million production budget. Audiences enjoyed the film perhaps more than critics, as it has an even stronger 98% audience score, the highest of any James Mangold movie. Unlike many of the films that frequently appear on the streamer's Global Top 10 chart, Ford v Ferrari undoubtedly deserves to be a Netflix hit.
Ford v Ferrari isn't available on Netflix in the United States, though it is also streaming on FXNow.
