Ford Pickup Trucks Investigated For Abrupt Downshifting Issue

Ford Motor Co. reveals the 2024 Ford F-150 pick-up truck

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into complaints regarding more than 540,000 Ford pickup trucks that are reportedly experiencing abrupt downshifting issues. The agency initiated the probe after receiving 86 consumer complaints about the problem with the trucks' automatic transmissions.

The investigation specifically focuses on Ford F-150 trucks from the 2014 model year. Concerns have been raised about the trucks downshifting to a lower gear without warning, leading to potential safety hazards. Some reports indicate that the rear wheels locked up, resulting in accidents and injuries.

One consumer shared a harrowing experience where their truck downshifted suddenly, causing a collision with a concrete barrier and another vehicle. Both drivers sustained injuries in the incident, highlighting the severity of the issue.

Ford, the manufacturer of the F-Series pickups, has stated that it is cooperating with NHTSA to assist in the investigation. The company acknowledges the importance of addressing safety concerns promptly and ensuring the well-being of its customers.

Notably, certain F-150 pickups from the 2011 and 2012 model years were previously recalled in 2016 for a similar downshifting problem. Subsequently, Ford expanded the recall to include 2013 models, underscoring the ongoing efforts to rectify the issue and enhance vehicle safety.

The investigation underscores the significance of proactive safety measures in the automotive industry and the critical role of regulatory bodies in addressing potential risks. As the top-selling vehicles in the U.S., Ford's F-Series pickups play a significant role in the automotive market, emphasizing the importance of ensuring their safety and reliability.
