Ford issued a massive U.S.-based recall of more than 870,000 of its F-150 pickup trucks July 28, owing to an issue with the electric parking brake, which the company found can activate without warning.
The recall impacts F-150 trucks between 2021 and 2023, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Trucks with a single exhaust system are included in the recall.

Ford said that, in the affected vehicles, the rear axle wiring may come in contact with the rear axle housing, which could result in the "unintended activation of the electric parking brake while driving." The defect, Ford said, could result in "loss of control of the vehicle," which increases the "risk of a crash."
The company said in the filing that it was aware of 918 warranty claims and three field reports for the wire damage issue in North America, all received between Aug. 2021 and July 2023. Of these claims, 299 reported unintended activation of the parking brake, and of those, 19 reported activation while driving.
Ford (F) -) said that it has not received any reports of either accidents or injuries occurring as a result of the defect.
The company said impacted customers should take their trucks to a dealership where their rear axle wiring can be inspected. If wear is found, the wiring harness will be replaced; if there's no obvious wear, dealerships will install a protective wrap to help reduce the risk of wear over time.
Ford's stock was down more than 4% Friday morning, trading at around $13 per share.
