It’s smaller sibling may have taken the top step when it comes to car sales, but twenty years on the Ford Focus remains a strong member to Ford’s model range – especially in the UK.
Now in its fourth generation, Ford have aimed to make the Focus its best yet and it certainly has matched that statement.
The chassis is lighter in aim to bring back the great driving elements its early cars were praised for, the refreshed engine range has also been claimed to be the most efficient Focus yet.

Performance
With four engine options to choose from, the new Ford Focus starts off the range with a 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine taken from the outgoing machine, we would consider skipping past this option and going for the more potent 1.5-litre petrol options featuring 148bhp or 179bhp.
Moving towards diesel, there is a choice of a 1.5-litre engine, bringing either 94bhp or 123bhp. Or the 2.0-litre option that brings a good 148bhp.
In this instance, we chose the 1.5 petrol with 148bhp and we do think it’s the best pick of the range. From behind the wheel, the torque felt consistent whilst also offering a great amount of power to enjoy the challenges of a twisty road.
Ride & Handling
Ford wanted to bring back, the driving performance from the original back in 1998.
This fourth-generation model has pulled out all the stop as the Vignale trim manages to deliver an engaging driving experience while soaking up all the bumps in the road nicely.
Going for the higher performing ST-Line models will offer a firmer and lower suspension but in turn is set to bring a more dynamic drive – due to be released in summer both estate and hatchback bodystyles. Although to keep in mind the 1.0-litre models don’t include the fully-independent rear suspension set-up.
Interior & Equipment
The driving position offered on the new Ford Focus is top level, the dials are clear and easy to use and adjustability on offer is a great amount.
The Focus is easy enough to park without the use of any electronic aids, this is thanks to the front and rear visibility that’s matches rivals in its segment.
Although when needed, parking sensors are offered as standard from the Titanium trims and above – while Active Park Assist is available on all automatic models.
Cost
The new Ford Focus starts at £17,930, which is a reasonable amount considering all what is on offer here.
Although our Vignale test car starts from £27,300 but all the extra kit available from this trim, it makes it worth the hike.

Moving onto running costs, the claimed 46.3mpg makes the 1.5 EcoBoost an affordable choice to use on a day-to-day basis while car tax will also be low due to its 138g/km emissions.
Verdict
The Ford Focus remains the best car in its segment, we gave it a 5 out of 5 rating solely on the fact for its sheer value, the Focus is unmatched for its offerings compared to rivals.
Although rivals may have posher interiors and more space, the Focus is the best to drive.
