Ford Electric Truck Rival Ram Unveils Details on Its First Pickup

The automobile industry is ready to explode with manufacturers rolling out a parade of all-electric pickup trucks to compete with industry leader Ford's (F)  F-150 Lightning.

Elon Musk's Tesla (TSLA) has the most anticipated all-electric truck planned with its Cybertruck that is expected to begin manufacturing in mid-2023 with mass production slated for late in the year.

Tesla hasn't unveiled the version of the Cybertruck that will be mass-produced, but the vehicle is so popular that the Austin, Texas-based carmaker is no longer taking orders outside North America. Pricing for the Cybertruck has yet to be revealed by Musk and Tesla. But auto industry experts estimate a base price of about $40,000.

Cybertruck Will Challenge Ford F-150 Lightning

The Cybertruck is said to have a low center of gravity, which provides good traction control and torque, enabling acceleration from 0-60 mph in just 2.9 seconds and up to 500 miles of range. The pickup truck has up to 3,500 pounds (1,587 kg) of payload capacity and adjustable air suspension and 100 cubic feet of exterior, lockable storage. The Cybertruck has also a towing capability of over 14,000 pounds (6,350 kg), the carmaker has said.

Ford has a reputation for having the most popular internal combustion engine pickup truck in the F-150 for many years, and its F-150 Lightning EV has been America's best selling electric pickup since it launched in April 2022. The Ford F-150 Lightning has an EPA estimated top range of 320 miles.

General Motors' (GM) GMC brand already sells the Hummer EV, an electric version of the iconic Hummer. The electric version of the Chevrolet Silverado pickup is expected in 2023. The young manufacturer of electric vehicles Rivian (RIVN) already markets the R1T, a pickup full of technological innovations. Rivian's R1T has a max range of 314 miles.

Ram 1500 REV Coming to EV Truck Market

The Netherlands-based Stellantis has ambitious plans for its entry into the electric pickup market as it on April 5 unveiled details on its all-electric 2025 Ram 1500 REV, its first battery electric light-duty pickup truck that will be built in the US, which will be available in the fourth quarter of 2024. Consumers can put their name on the preorder list on the Ram 1500 REV website for a $100 membership fee that is refundable up until the member is notified that the vehicle is available. The manufacturer's suggested retail price is not listed on the website.

“The all-electric Ram 1500 REV is a monumental milestone on our continued journey to offer the industry’s best electrified solutions and further fortifies our award-winning lineup,” Mike Koval Jr., Ram brand CEO for Stellantis said in a statement. “We believe in bringing the right range of powertrain solutions to our customers and will continue to redefine the pickup truck segment. Our all-new Ram 1500 REV pushes past the competition in areas customers care about most including range, towing, payload and charge time.”

The Ram 1500 REV will challenge Ford and Tesla head-on with an optional 229 kilowatt-hour large battery pack with a targeted range of up to 500 miles, which matches the Tesla Cybertruck stated range of 500 miles and surpasses the Ford F-150 Lightning's top 320 range. The Ram 1500 REV's standard 168 kilowatt-hour battery pack will have a targeted range of up to 350 miles, still higher than the F-150 Lightning.

The all-electric Ram can accelerate from 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds and has 654 horsepower and 620 lb.-ft. of torque, up to 24 inches of water fording, up to 14,000 pounds towing and a maximum payload capacity of 2,700 pounds.

The Ram 1500 REV's technology features the latest, most advanced Uconnect system ever, with a 12-or new 14.5-inch touchscreen display and intuitive user experience. The Uconnect 5 system offers even more connected services and features for unmatched ease of use.
