Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has been remanded in custody after appearing in court for the first time to face charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault.
The 21-year-old footballer was charged by Greater Manchester Police on Saturday and held in custody over the weekend.
Appearing in the dock at Manchester magistrates court on Monday morning, Greenwood – wearing a grey hoodie and white t-shirt - spoke to confirm his name, date of birth, and address but did not enter any pleas.
District Judge Mark Hadfield decided to remand Greenwood in custody as the case was sent to Manchester Minshull Street crown court on November 21.
The footballer is accused of offences against the same woman, including an alleged attempted rape in October 2021.
According to the charges, Greenwood is accused of accessing the woman’s social media accounts, “stopping and altering” her socialising, and making “threats and derogatory comments”.
Greenwood, who lives in the Trafford area of Manchester, faces an allegation of controlling and coercive behaviour, and he is also accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in December last year.
Members of Greenwood’s family were in court as the footballer was brought up from the cells.
His footballer career has been on hold for the last nine months, in the wake of his arrest in January.
Greenwood, who has one cap for England, was arrested after allegations about his conduct appeared online. Nike suspended and later terminated its sponsorship deal with the footballer, while Electronic Arts confirmed his removal from active squads on its Fifa 22 game.
As a result of the judge’s decision, Greenwood will be held in prison on remand until the next hearing in his case.
