Football world pays respects to Gordon McQueen as Scotland legend laid to rest

The football world paid its respects to Scotland legend Gordon McQueen today as he was laid to rest.

Famous faces joined friends and loved ones to pay their respects at the service for the towering defender.

The 70-year-old - who was born in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, and made 30 appearances for Scotland - passed away earlier this month after a battle with dementia.

His family believe the former centre half - who scored an iconic goal for his country against England at Wembley in 1977 - developed the syndrome due to heading the ball during his playing days.

Daughter Hayley, a television presenter with Sky Sports, who has spoken out about his fight against dementia, was supported by friends and family.

McQueen spent 13 of his 16 years as a pro playing in England and continued to live south of the border after retiring. But his love for his homeland shone through at the service, which took place at St Mary's Cathedral, in Middlesbrough.

His coffin was draped in a saltire with a wreath of thistles and one of his 30 Scotland caps placed on top. In another nod to his love of Scotland, his hearse and coffin were piped to the cathedral.

Former Scotland manager Gordon Strachan, who played with McQueen at Manchester United in the 1980s, was in attendance, as was former United teammate Bryan Robson.

Former Tartan Army winger Eddie Gray - a teammate of McQueen with both Leeds United and Scotland - was also spotted at the service.

Ex-Scotland striker Joe Jordan, who played with McQueen at Leeds, Manchester United and the 1974 and 1978 World Cups, was also there to say a final farewell to his friend.

McQueen started his professional career with Paisley club St Mirren in 1970, before moving south to the English top flight in 1972. He was part of Don Revie's great Leeds United side, winning the English league title in 1974.

He was a key player in the club's famous European Cup run the following year, scoring three times on route to the final. Known as an uncompromising defender, he missed the final defeat to Bayern Munich through suspension.

In 1978 he followed Jordan in making the short journey from Leeds to Manchester, signing for Manchester United. He tasted more success at Old Trafford, winning the FA Cup and Charity Shield in 1983.

He retired in 1986 following one season with Hong Kong side Seiko Sports Association. He went on to become a pundit on Soccer Saturday where he became good friends with presenter Jeff Stelling, who was also in attendance.

McQueen was a much-loved player during his career and the fondness he is held with can be seen by former employers Manchester United.

The card attached to the Red Devils' flowers read: 'In memory of Gordon, with forever-lasting love and respect for a great player and a great man. From everyone at Manchester United'.
