Football fan goes viral after 'romantic weekend away' turns out to be away day

The life of a fanatical footballer supporter isn't easy. Following your team religiously, both home and away, can be an expensive hobby financially, as well as testing the patience of loved ones.

Sometimes a little bit of kidology and bending of the truth is required to get partners, wives or husbands to give the nod of approval so you can attend a game. Just ask Joe Taylor. The 25-year-old is an avid Sheffield Wednesday fan and naturally wanted to make sure he could get his request in with his other half for the upcoming long trip down to face Plymouth Argyle.

However, rather than directly ask his partner Georgia Grayson about the prospect of visiting Home Park Joe instead decided to cleverly avoid the subject and instead focus on the prospect of a weekend away in Devon.

He shared a screenshot of a text conversation between him and Georgia, 21, with him starting off with: "Been thinking by the way, I reckon we should do a weekend away me and you x."

He then proceeds to ask if Georgia is free on September 10 - unbeknownst to her the day of the League One meeting between the Pilgrims and the Owls. When she replies she is off the whole weekend, Joe says: "No problem. I've booked us a hotel for that weekend, it's down south by the coast proper nice. You'll enjoy it."

He shared the screenshot alongside the confirmation of the Plymouth fixture date, with the caption: "Hook, line, sinker."

The tweet was liked and retweeted thousands of times although posting later on, Joe sent out another tongue-in-cheek tweet saying: "Now taking fresh applicants for a weekend trip to Plymouth, all inclusive please message me directly if interested"

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post about the viral episode, he said the couple are still planning to go to Plymouth – despite her threatening to “dump” him for his behaviour. “Her reaction was pretty much as showed on the messages, she said she was going to dump me”, Joe said. “I am in the absolute doghouse.”

The Owls have made a solid start to the new season, registering four points from a possible six so far. Darren Moore's side lost out to eventual winners Sunderland in last season's League One play-offs but after a 3-3 draw on the opening day against Portsmouth they recorded an impressive 1-0 win over MK Dons last weekend.

Speaking after the win, secured thanks to a Josh Windass penalty, Moore said: "It’s great to win your first away game because it sets the tone. We got the goal which we deserved and I am pleased for Josh because we all know what happened to his season last year. He’s played two games running, he’s building up to where he wants to be and to get the winning goal today was the icing on the cake for Josh."

Moore's men face a reunion with Sunderland on Wednesday night, when they host them at Hillsborough in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
