Football club makes huge change after trouble flares after match

Southport Football Club has been forced to take action as anti-social behaviour reportedly blighted their game against Gloucester City on Saturday.

The National League North side saw fans reportedly throwing stones at each other as well as at cars after the 1-0 loss at home on Saturday which has led to the rules around tickets changing for all future games. In a statement released by the club, it revealed all fans under the age of 16 going forward will need to be accompanied by an adult.

This decision comes after videos circulated online of fans clashing outside the stadium on Haig Avenue during their recent game on Saturday, April 1. The statement released by the club said: "In light of recent incidents at Haig Avenue, the club are unfortunately, and regrettably, left with no option other than to insist that all children aged 16 or below must be accompanied by an adult.

The Club adopts a zero-tolerance approach to any behaviour that has the potential to endanger other fans. Haig Avenue is known as a welcoming, family club, and we will not let that be ruined by a minority. Tickets for children aged 12-16 must now be purchased with an Adult ticket.

"We reserve the right to request ID from anyone aged 17 and above. Those juniors who have already purchased a ticket without an accompanying adult ticket will be offered a full refund.

"We would also ask fans to note that the game against Chester on Easter Monday will be an all ticket game. There will be no cash turnstiles available on the day and we will not have tickets available for cash sale in the Club Shop or in the bar.

"The club is currently reviewing footage of Saturday’s incidents and fans should note that any deemed to be involved and subsequently identified may subsequently be refused access to Southport Football Club."

Merseyside Police was approached for comment.
