Footage shows truck crashing through gates of Russian Embassy in Dublin as man arrested

A truck has crashed through the gates of the Russian Embassy in Dublin.

The incident happened on Monday afternoon in the capital.

The embassy, which is based on Orwell Road on the southside of the city, has been the subject of a number of attacks and protests in recent days.

And the latest incident saw a truck dramatically reverse through the gates, with gardai confirming that a man has been arrested.

A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí are investigating an incident of criminal damage that occurred at a property on Orwell Road this afternoon, Monday 7th March 2022 at approximately 1.30pm.

"One male was arrested and taken to Rathfarnham Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"Investigations are ongoing."

It comes after a number of demonstrations at the site recently after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Last week in a separate incident, a priest hit the headlines after he chucked red paint all over the gates of the embassy while speaking to RTE's Joe Duffy live on air.

Fr. Fergal MacDonagh travelled to the embassy last Friday afternoon, claiming that his actions were his way of letting Ukrainians know that he supports them during Russia's ongoing invasion.

He said while on air: "I'm outside the gates of the Russian Embassy in Dublin.

"I'm about to throw paint at it. I won't be the first and I won't be the last. I'm going to do it now. I'm trying to not spill it."

The man went silent for a few seconds as a horn noise could be heard in the background.

He spoke to Joe again to inform him that he had done it.

"I threw the empty tin of paint on the driveway," he added.

"I'm furious at what is happening. There were children being born in bomb shelters."

When Joe told him that he could be charged with criminal damage, he said "So be it".

He also said that we should "burn" the embassy.

Before he hung up, a person could be heard in the background asking him to get off the phone so they could take his details.
