Footage shows hundreds of commuters sandwiched at tram stop after tram derailment causes travel chaos

Commuters are still facing a nightmare journey home after a tram derailed in Manchester city centre earlier this afternoon.

The Bury-bound service veered off the tracks between Deansgate-Castlefield and St Peter's Square shortly after 2pm, meaning a number of trams had to be diverted.

Workers are still at the scene of the incident as they attempt to re-rail the stranded tram, which is having a major knock-on effect to passengers using Metrolink services.

A video sent to the M.E.N taken around 6.30pm showed hundreds of commuters sandwiched together at Cornbrook tram stop as they attempted to board packed-out trams.

The queue to board services heading towards Manchester city centre appeared to be several people deep, with trams pulling into the station seemingly full.

TfGM have warned that disruption is expected to continue for some time due to the knock-on effect of the incident, which has seen St Peter's Square tram stop fully closed.

A road traffic collision in south Manchester has also seen trams disrupted tonight, with no services operating between Firswood and Martinscroft on the Manchester Airport line.

An investigation has been launched by travel bosses in the city to establish exactly how the tram came off the track. Passengers were safely taken off the service and there were no reported injuries.

Many commuters have been forced to abandon their normal route home, with a number of bus services put on by TfGM.

No trams are currently serving St Peter's Square and a rail replacement bus is in place between Deansgate-Castlefield and Piccadilly, and Victoria and Piccadilly.

TfGM’s Head of Operations, Alex Cropper, said: "This incident will impact services across the network into the early evening and we are sorry for any disruption to people’s journeys.

"Engineers are working to re-rail the tram as quickly as possible and we will be undertaking a full investigation to understand what has happened. I’d encourage people to check before they travel and plan their journey accordingly."
