Foetus removed from a 7-month-old baby: Know about this rare event called "Foetus in Fetu"

In a rare event, doctors at the Sarojini Naidu Children's Hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj removed 2 kilograms of foetus from a seven-month-old infant. The four-hour-long surgery was successful as doctors could separate the foetus from the infant.

As per reports, the baby was admitted to the hospital on July 24 due to a bloated stomach and acute pain. A CT scan revealed that a foetus is present in it. The child's mother had died after the birth.

Foetus in fetu

This rare condition is called Foetus in fetu in which an underdeveloped foetus , which is also known as the parasitic foetus develops inside its twin instead of developing inside its mother's womb.

This condition was first described by Johann Friedrich Meckel in the late 18th century.

This happens from abnormal embryogenesis in diamniotic monochorionic twins. The first such case was reported in an adult male aged 47. The common signs of foetus in fetu is a noticeable abdominal mass, jaundice, intestinal obstruction, respiratory distress and vomiting.

Last year, a similar case was reported from Bihar's East Champaran where an infant was admitted to a private nursing home for treatment and it was found that the baby had this rare condition.

Another similar case was reported from Jharkhand's Ramgarh district where a 21-day-old baby was found to have 8 foetuses. Initially, it was thought that the child has tumour.
