Focus Ireland calls on public to take on series of fitness challenges to raise funds

Focus Ireland is calling on the public to take part in a series of challenges across the country over the summer months in an effort to raise funds for those experiencing homelessness in Ireland.

'On the Move' is a new series and offers a choice of fitness challenges to be completed this summer from July to September, in scenic locations across the country. Whether it's ascending the highest peak in Ireland on Carrauntoohil, cycling one of Ireland's greenways, or completing a hike, there is something for everyone.

Homelessness is on the increase in Ireland with statistics from Focus Ireland showing that over 12,000 people in Ireland are experiencing homelessness in Ireland in comparison to over 9,000 people this time last year.

CEO of Focus Ireland Pat Dennigan said: "The number of people in homelessness is continuously rising. There are 3,594 children now homeless in this country, now more than ever, we need the public to get out and about to support On the move for Focus Ireland to raise vital funds for our work.

"Our specially trained staff are working hard to help to protect children from the trauma caused by homelessness and help families secure a home. Join us and register for your local event, or organise your own, as every effort will help make a difference."

Focus Ireland will be hosting six exciting events across the country this summer which include three hikes and three greenways:

  • Kerry: Carrauntoohil Hike, 8 July
  • Donegal: Full Moon Sliabh Liag Hike, 5 August
  • Wicklow: Glendalough Hike, 13 July
  • Waterford: Waterford Greenway Cycle, 29 July
  • Mayo: Achill Greenway Cycle, 9 September
  • Limerick: Limerick Greenway Cycle, 15 July

The series are supported by Horizon Therapeutics and member Ali Shaw said: “We have been firm supporters of Focus Ireland for a number of years and are delighted to support the ‘On the move’ campaign to help raise much needed funds and awareness for homelessness in Ireland.

"At Horizon, we are committed to supporting the communities in which we operate, and we know that Focus Ireland do incredible work to support families and children on their journey to a home of their own. As a team we are really looking forward to getting out and exploring our beautiful country during the summer and we hope that many more will join us on these adventures.”
