Fly-tipping hotspot goes up for sale after lying unused for more than 15 years

An empty stretch of land which has been blighted by fly-tipping in recent years has been put up for a sale - and you could get it cheap.

The land at 153 Commercial Road in Pillgwenlly, Newport, has been put up for sale for just £10,000 after lying empty for more than 15 years.

The empty site, located on the main high street in Pill, has become a well-known fly-tipping hotspot in recent years. It has been the site of numerous clean-up efforts both by Newport City Council, and campaigners and locals have repeatedly called for a permanent solution for the site.

Listed online by Newport-based Paul Fosh Auctions, 153 Commercial Road is described as "land with potential" and will go to auction on March 8 to 10.

"The site was previously comprised of a three-storey property with commercial premises on the ground floor and residential accommodation above," the listing reads.

"The site may be suitable for re-development subject to the relevant planning consents."

Local Pill resident and taxi driver Omar Ali said it was "great news" that the site was up for sale and that a "permanent" solution had been needed for some time.

"It's not been good," he said. "Easily over the years it's been cleared 20 times plus, at a cost to the tax payers.

"It's substantial [to clean the site] sometimes as much as £4,000 approximately, as they've had to clear a lot of sharps, drugs paraphernalia etc. They've had to use outside companies on many occasions, specialist companies."

Mr Ali, who was a Newport city councillor from 2013 to 2017, said the site had been vacant for "easily 15 years, if not more" and questioned how much money had been spent clearing it.

"Imagine over that 15 years, cleaning it approximately twice a year - that's 30 times.

"I do really wonder how much it owes the Newport tax payer and [whether there] are there other examples of pieces of land like this, that are forever getting cleaned by the authorities."
