Flu Season Surges but Impact of Holidays Uncertain

A sign for flu and covid vaccinations is displayed at a pharmacy store in Palatine, Ill., Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023.

Ah, the flu season. A time when coughs echo through the air and tissue boxes become our closest companions. But this year, it seems like the flu has decided to make a grand entrance and steal the show. The latest government data reveals that the number of respiratory illnesses across the U.S. has skyrocketed, leaving us all wondering: Did our holiday gatherings contribute to this flu frenzy? Well, my dear readers, it's a bit too soon to say for sure.

Now, let's take a look at the numbers. Last week, during the joyous holiday period between Christmas and New Year's, a whopping 38 states reported high or very high levels of respiratory illnesses. Compare that to the 31 states from the previous week, and you've got yourself a sizable spike. But hold your horses—it's not all just flu. This measure encompasses various ailments like COVID-19, RSV, and other winter viruses. Nonetheless, it seems that the flu is taking the lead in this infectious parade.

Alicia Budd, the CDC's illustrious representative, predicts that the elevated flu levels will linger for several more weeks. Oh, what joy! But fear not, for this flu season is categorized as moderate thus far. Remember, my friends, interpreting flu reports during and after the holidays can be as tricky as finding the perfect gift. With schools closed and people traveling, it's no wonder the numbers dance around like a flock of elusive birds. Some folks might choose to suffer in silent isolation rather than visit a doctor, while others embrace their symptoms and march straight into the waiting room.

The flu season typically reaches its peak between December and February, and Dr. Mandy Cohen, the CDC Director, believes we'll hit that summit before the month's end. Luckily, this season's flu shots are well-matched to the strain overwhelming the masses. So, there's hope for those brave souls who roll up their sleeves in the name of health!

But don't lose sight of our little viral friend, COVID-19. Although the number of cases isn't surging as rapidly as the flu, it's still putting more people in the hospital. The CDC's data shows that COVID-19 hospitalizations are outpacing those of the flu. Lauren Ancel Meyers from the University of Texas points out that we're experiencing a second rise in COVID-19 cases after a smaller peak in September. The uncertainty looms as we can't predict with certainty when this surge will reach its apex.

In the midst of it all, a new version of the coronavirus has emerged—JN.1. But fear not, my curious readers, for health officials assure us that JN.1 doesn't seem to cause any more severe illness than its predecessors. Phew! We can't handle any more surprises in this pandemic extravaganza.

So, my friends, as we navigate this wild flu season filled with uncertainty and surprises, let us remember to keep our tissues close, our hands clean, and our spirits high. Whether it's COVID-19, RSV, or the flu, we've got this. Stay healthy, stay safe, and may we all emerge victorious from this viral battle.
