'Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor 2 is a ridiculous idea and it should not happen'

Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather have been teasing a potential boxing rematch between themselves - and hopefully that is where the talk about a second fight starts and ends.

Many felt that the first bout was a ridiculous idea five years ago and now the majority know that a rematch would be an even more stupid thing to do.

McGregor might be a good striker inside the octagon, but he is nowhere near the level of Mayweather in boxing terms, not that many are, even at the age of 45.

He was schooled by the American in 2017 and Mayweather could have finished him well before the tenth-round stoppage.

His obsession with boxing was blamed for his first defeat to Dustin Poirier last year as he was more focussed on securing a fight with Manny Pacquiao than beating 'The Diamond'.

Quite simply, McGregor is an MMA fighter and that is what he should stick to. He has tasted victory just once since 2016 and he needs to get back to winning UFC fights before damaging his legacy even more.

By the end of this year, there is the real possibility that McGregor will have appeared more times in court in 2022 than he has fought since 2020.

But despite him having enough money to last him for life, the Notorious is apparently as eager as ever to return to fighting and he clearly doesn't need another bumper payday.

His return must come inside the octagon and he is not short of potential UFC opponents.

The fact that the promotion's president has indictated that McGregor could return to action in a title fight with Kamuru Usman shows the incomparable pull that the Dubliner still has. There is nobody else with his recent record that would ever be considered for a title shot.

If a return to action by the end of 2022 is still achievable for McGregor, why not come back against a ranked welterweight opponent towards the end of the year, see if he still has it and then challenge for the title in the first half of 2023?

Leave the boxing to the boxers.
