One of boxing’s greatest trainers held a masterclass in Dumfries this week.
Floyd Mayweather Senior, the father of undefeated multiple time world champion Floyd Jr, visited the Doonhamers Amateur Boxing Club for a four-hour training session on Tuesday.
The 69-year-old flew into the UK this week to do padwork with boxers at the Irving Street club.
Youngsters from 12-years-old up to the adults age group came along for the day’s event which was run by Mayweather Promotions and the Pound 4 Pound Boxing Team.
Anne Armstrong, head coach at Doonhamers ABC, said: “As a coach it was just great to watch all my team enjoying such a surreal and once in a lifetime experience that will never happen again in our local town.
“The fact that Floyd and all his team just travelled over for one day and headed back the next day was – to be honest – just mad to even think he would do that for our wee club in Dumfries, but he did.
“They gave a fantastic session and the padwork was just insane. It was high-level coaching with some of the best in the world.”
Floyd Sr trained 11-time world title winner Oscar De La Hoya, Manchester’s Ricky Hatton and his son Floyd Jr. Anne added: “When Kaseem Saleem and myself sat down in the club at the end of last year and said we can do this, I wondered if he’d come, but Kaseem assured me that together we could do it.
“After lots of work behind the scenes over the last four months it all came together on Tuesday.
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to Kaseem Saleem and Alpha Security, we couldn’t have done it without them.
Doonhamers ABC is planning for another boxing legend to come to the club later this year with details still to be announced.
