Floyd Mayweather responds to criticism over opponent for exhibition fight

Floyd Mayweather has suggested their is a racist element to criticism of his post-boxing career.

The ring legend, who was 50-0 as a professional, has announced his third exhibition bout since retiring; an eight-round contest against Don Moore which will take place in Dubai on May 14. Mayweather previously took on Japanese kickboxing star Tenshin Nasakawa and social media star Logan Paul in similar bouts.

Moore won 18 of his 19 fights a professional but never faced a fighter with a winning record before retiring in 2016 and many fans have dismissed Mayweather's latest outing as nothing more than a cash grab, but the 45-year-old hit back, claiming people don't criticise wealthy white entrepreneurs in the same way.

"[I'm going to] pick up a couple of dollars," he said in a video shared on social media. "They're upset because I'm smart, I kept all my faculties and made a lot of smart investments.

"When great people like Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, the Waltons, the people who own Walmart and Walgreens, when they're getting money in their 50s, their 60s, 70s, 80s, even 90s, it's ok.

"But when a young kid like myself from the inner city, from the ghetto... I was able to work my way up and leave boxing on my own terms and keep all my faculties and kept all of my money, they're upset that I can go out there and continue to make $50m or $60million outside the ring. You can't get upset, this is what God wanted."

Mayweather will take on moore on the helipad on top of the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai. He had been in talks to take on social media star Money Kicks at the same venue in February but talks broke down between the rivals.

At a press conference to announce his fight with Moore earlier this week, Mayweather said:" I am always trying to push the envelope and if something is brought to my attention that has a unique aspect to it, I am always interested.

“Having a fight on the helipad of the Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai and the opportunity to be the star of the show is going to be something I will remember always. People all over the world can buy the PPV and watch us fight high above, almost in the sky.”
