A Florida woman broke down in tears after learning she could be jailed for 15 years after she allegedly threatened a health insurance company over a denied claim.
Briana Boston, 42, buried her face in her hands during her hearing after hearing Assistant State Attorney Matthew Hendry ask the court for house arrest with GPS tracking "to protect the community," as reported by WFLA.
As Boston's alleged threats come following the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, the judge presiding added that she thought Boston's $100,000 bond was fitting.
Lakeland Police Chief Sam Taylor told WFLA, "It's not like she's a child, she's 42 years old. So we're not dealing with a child here, she should have certainly known better."
Boston is accused of saying, "Delay, Deny, Depose. You people are next," at the end of a call to BlueCross BlueShield about a denied claim, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by First Coast News.
The words "delay," "deny" and "depose" were reportedly found engraved on the bullet casings used in Thompson's death. Reports connected the words to the title of a book, Delay, Deny, Defend, authored by Jay Feinman, which criticizes the health insurance industry.
Boston allegedly admitted to police that she used the words during the phone call. But while she apologized, she reportedly added that healthcare companies "deserved karma" and that "they are evil," the affidavit stated as reported by First Coast News.
The 42-year-old was charged with threats to conduct a mass shooting or an act of terrorism, which can carry a sentence of 15 years in prison.
