Severe weather specialist and CBS12 neteorologist Michael Ehrenberg told locals to take shelter.
Boats have been overturned, cars piled on top of each other and homes damaged in the storm.
Residents were forced to take cover, with some hiding in bathrooms and others in storm shelters.
Local resident Shawn MacNamara told WPTV: "We ducked down in our car as it went over us. Scariest thing ever."
Others took to social media, with one local saying: "This is the scariest thing I've ever been in. Oh, my God. Holy s**t. I hope this stops. I just saw a car flip over in front of me."
The storm is expected to move across the state with weather warnings in place in Tampa Bay and Orange and Seminole counties.
Tornados, hail, heavy rain and strong winds are forecast as the storm continues with coastal towns expected to take the brunt of the impact.
