Florida softball player Madison Schemitz shared her remarkable recovery from a knife attack last year that left her paralyzed.
Schemitz, who was allegedly stabbed 15 times by an ex-boyfriend while leaving a restaurant with her mother on June 3, 2023, walked across the stage on June 1, 2024 to receive her diploma at graduation from Ponta Vedra High School (Fla.).
“One whole year! I wish I had the right words to describe this last year,” the teen wrote on Instagram. “Through all the sleepless nights, secret tears, and the never-ending struggle, the last year has been far from easy but my heart is so full.”
The powerful moment was captured on a video, which she shared on Instagram as well, along with a few celebratory pictures.
Schemitz also said, “A respiratory therapist shared this very quote with me. He reminded me that when you’re going through hell, nobody ever wants to stay there. So, keep going. Every day, this quote has served as a reminder to persevere, even in the face of adversity and to push through it with the belief that there is an end to the struggle.”
A day before, she thanked those who had been there and helped her through the recovery process.
“When I was at my lowest you, all were there,” Schemitz, who was an infielder and captain of the softball team, told hospital staff and first responders a week ago Thursday. “Providing comfort and support and expertise that ultimately saved my life. Your dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to your work are nothing short of remarkable.”
