GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida's quarterback DJ Lagway is set to play a crucial role in determining the future of head coach Billy Napier at the University of Florida. Lagway, a standout freshman, will have the opportunity to showcase his talent and potentially secure a much-needed victory for Napier as the Gators face a challenging schedule in November, starting with a matchup against No. 2 Georgia this Saturday in Jacksonville.

The Gators, currently 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Southeastern Conference, are aiming to end a three-game losing streak against Georgia and provide Napier with a significant win against a ranked opponent and a rival. Napier's track record against ranked teams and rivals has been less than stellar, with a 2-12 record against ranked opponents and a 1-9 record against rival teams over the past three seasons.

Despite a rocky start to the season with losses to Miami and Texas A&M, Napier's fortunes have improved with three wins in the last four games, showing signs of progress on both offense and defense. Lagway's emergence as a key player has been a major factor in Florida's recent success, with the freshman quarterback impressing in his limited appearances.

Lagway has completed 63% of his passes for 1,024 yards, with five touchdowns and five interceptions overall. In his two starts, Lagway has been particularly impressive, throwing for 715 yards and showcasing his ability to connect on deep passes, including 10 completions of 40 yards or longer.

Coach Napier has praised Lagway's skill set, highlighting his capabilities as a passer and runner in Florida's read-option offense. Lagway's performance against Kentucky and Samford has drawn praise from teammates and opponents alike, with Georgia coach Kirby Smart acknowledging Lagway's arm talent, size, and poise in the pocket.

As Florida prepares to face Georgia and a string of ranked opponents in the coming weeks, Lagway's performance will be crucial in determining the team's success and Napier's future at the helm. A strong showing from Lagway against tough competition could solidify Napier's position and potentially elevate the Gators' standing in the college football landscape.
