Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is in the process of considering candidates to fill the U.S. Senate seat that will be vacated by Senator Marco Rubio, who is expected to resign to serve as Secretary of State in the incoming Trump administration. Governor DeSantis has indicated that a decision on the appointment is likely to be made by early January.
The governor's office has already begun vetting potential candidates for the Senate seat. Several individuals have expressed interest in the position, and additional names are being gathered for consideration. More extensive vetting and candidate interviews will take place in the coming weeks.
Among the names being suggested to fill Rubio's seat is Lara Trump, the Republican National Committee co-chair and daughter-in-law of President-elect Donald Trump. Some key Trump allies, including Senator Rick Scott and others, have recommended Lara Trump for the position.
DeSantis emphasized the importance of selecting a Senator who aligns with President Trump's agenda, particularly on issues such as immigration, border security, fiscal responsibility, and conservative principles. The governor's statement indicates that he is committed to choosing a candidate who can deliver on these priorities.
While there is pressure from some quarters to make a swift decision, DeSantis has signaled that he will not rush the selection process. According to Florida law, the governor has the authority to appoint a temporary replacement for the Senate seat until the next general election in 2026.
Other names that have been mentioned as potential candidates to replace Rubio include James Uthmeier, DeSantis's chief of staff, Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, state Attorney General Ashley Moody, outgoing Florida House Speaker Paul Renner, and former state House Speaker Jose Oliva.
