Floods misery in Renfrewshire as residents face soggy end to 2022

Renfrewshire residents have suffered a soggy end to 2022 – as a weather warning for heavy rain came to fruition.

There was travel chaos this morning as many commuters headed out to work for the final time of the year.

Large parts of the area were flooded as a result of heavy downpours overnight and into the morning.

Vehicles became stranded in the middle of roads as motorists tried to navigate their way through rising water levels.

On Fulbar Road in Ferguslie, a scene featured a car and a van stuck in the pooling water as the road became impassable from around 6am onwards.

Similarly, motorists travelling along the A760 at Lochwinnoch found themselves having to reroute as the road became submerged.

McGill's buses reported that the 17 and 20 bus routes were unable to serve Waverley Road/Ivanhoe Road and Fulbar Road/Green Road, respectively, as a result of the flooding.

North Ayrshire’s Largs community resilience team advised people to avoid the area around 9am.

Flooding also affected areas in and around Bridge of Weir and Howwood.

On the railways, Network Rail operatives closed the train line near Bishopton where rockfall had previously seen it shut earlier this year.

A Network Rail spokesperson explained that they had closed the line for “safety reasons” and added: “Engineers need to inspect the track for any possible damage given the fast-flowing water.”

And in Lochwinnoch, the earlier flooding which had seen the closure of the A760 led to the cancellation of trains as the railway line also became flooded.

This meant ScotRail could not run trains between Ayr, Ardrossan and Largs in Ayrshire or Glasgow – ensuring further disruption for passengers who have already been severely affected by workers taking industrial action.

The Paisley Daily Express reported on how the Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for rain.

Forecasters predicted there could be some flooding in the area and warned commuters, households and businesses of the potential inconvenience.
