Flooding and 'danger to life' warnings as thunderstorm to hit Scotland

SCOTS have been warned to expect “sudden flooding” with a chance of “danger to life” as major thunderstorms are predicted to hit the country.

The Met Office has issued new weather warnings ahead of a storm expected to hit the UK on Sunday and Monday.

On Sunday, the central belt and the majority of southern Scotland have been issued a yellow warning for rain, with a chance that businesses and homes could be flooded.

The warning is in place from 1pm until midnight.

Separate thunderstorm warnings are in place south of the Border, with people in England warned to expect flooding and lightning strikes. These will have lifted by 8pm on Sunday.

On Monday, the Met Office has issued a thunderstorm warning for Scotland.

The yellow warning covers much of the east of the country, including Inverness, Edinburgh, Perth, Aberdeen, and Dundee. It also stretches to the west coast in more northern parts of Scotland.

The warning will be in place from 11am till 10pm.

The Met Office said that people in the warning area should be ready for:

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
