Rural communities have been warned to brace for days of isolation after Tropical Cyclone Dianne made landfall.

The category one system crossed the coast east of Cockatoo Island in northern Western Australia early on Saturday morning as a category one system and was expected to weaken within hours, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

It is moving southwards and expected to pass east of Derby - about 200 kilometres east of Broome - at midday.

The cyclone triggered damaging wind gusts up to 100km/h in coastal areas and residents were warned to watch out for six-hourly rainfall totals of up to 100mm.

The bureau said heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding was likely in northern and western parts of the Kimberley and could stretch further inland to the northern interior across the weekend.

The state's Department of Fire and Emergency Services warned communities in the Central Kimberley - including Fitzroy Crossing, Kalumburu, Kuri Bay, Mitchell Plateau and Mount Barnett - to prepare in case they became isolated.

Residents had been told to prepare their homes, including having up to seven days' worth of food and water.
