Flipside on Whiteladies Road closes after 15 years

A cocktail bar on Whiteladies road that boasted one of Bristol's biggest selections of local craft beers is closing after 15 years. Flipside near Clifton Down announced on its website last week that current owner Andy Dodd's time at the popular spot had " come to an end", but the post also revealed the bar has already "handed over the baton" to its new owner, the chef Sebastian Merry.

The bar will be reopening in early February as A.B.O.E., which stands for 'a bit of everything' and is the moniker of Merry's longtime popup, which he previously ran at the Cloak and Dagger. He had been resident in the kitchen at Flipside since September offering small plates, Sunday roast and a tasting menu.

The Michelin-trained chef describes his culinary style as "contemporary modern British fusion" and, according to his predecessors ", will be giving the much-loved site a new lease of life with an amazing new concept and some seriously tasty food." Teasers for the new space have been posted on A.B.O.E.'s Instagram page, but further information is yet to be revealed.

The complete statement from Flipside said: "After nearly 15 years of great times, delicious cocktails & banging parties at Flipside, Papaji's & Tequila Max, Andy's time has come to an end. We have handed over the baton to the new Owner and Chef, Sebastian Merry, who will be giving the much-loved site a new lease of life with an amazing new concept and some seriously tasty food.

"Andy and the team, current and previous, want to thank all the great guests they've hosted over the years and invite you all to come and try the new food and drink once A.B.O.E. is open.

"Chef Seb will be re-opening A.B.O.E. ... and if you would like to book a table, then please head to the Instagram page to book in until the new website is up and running."
