Flight attendant says buying airport chocolate is 'best way' to get seat upgrade

A flight attendant has revealed some of the reasons why airlines upgrade passengers for free, and all it usually takes is a small act of kindness.

TikToker Cierra, who posts under the username @cierra_mistt, shared a couple of things that holidaymakers can do that may result in a first-class service onboard their flight.

It's apparently as simple as "being nice", which flight attendants are always appreciative of. There are also some more specific ways that people can reportedly be upgraded for free - including buying snacks for the crew, the Express reports.

In Cierra's video, she said: "The miracles we can work when we are given some Starbucks or a pack of chocolate.

"Especially on those long days when we have back-to-back flights and we don't even have time to go get some food."

Boarding your flight with sweet treats and coffees for the staff is supposedly one of the most effective ways to get better treatment, and most cabin crew know about this - repeating the same behaviour when they're looking for an upgrade on their own holidays.

Flight attendant Miguel Muñoz agreed and said that he loves when passengers bring "Toblerone or Cadbury Dairy Milk Buttons" from the terminal.

"I am automatically nicer to the person who had that nice gesture. The cabin chief would always offer them free coffee and tea and if there are better seats available, we will move them!"

Former flight attendant Helena Afroughi also told Express.co.uk that this is indeed one of the best ways to get upgrades on the plane.

She explained: "What always works is when people bring some sweets to the crew, chocolates or whatever. And they make themselves known, don't just give it and run away.

"Usually, people do it as a thank you but I've seen it more with people that have family working as crew too so they appreciate the crew more."

The crew member also said that passengers should feel welcome enough to hang around and chat with members of staff.

But you shouldn't be doing this for too long "unless the conversation is flowing" so as not to take up too much of the flight attendant's time.

Meanwhile, TikTokker Cierra added that people are more likely to be bumped up to first class if they're sitting at the back of the plane.

This is because most planes are heavier at the back and sometimes the crew have to move people towards the front so that the weight is balanced.

She explained: "When we move people all the way up to the front it's not just because we are being nice, but normally if our flight is full we have to move people for weight and balance purposes."
