The recent storms that swept through the greater New Orleans area brought hours of torrential rainfall and flood emergencies, but have now moved east, putting an end to the life-threatening flash flooding. The intense deluge overwhelmed New Orleans' drainage system, transforming some roadways into flowing rivers.
New Orleans received over half a foot of rain in less than 12 hours, with Laplace, Louisiana, just to the west of the city, experiencing rainfall amounts approaching double digits. Some of the top rainfall reports in the state as of 2:30 p.m. ET (1:30 p.m. CT) include Laplace with 9.89 inches, Lutcher with 7.62 inches, Matairie with 7.33 inches, and the west side of New Orleans with 7.21 inches.
Despite the storms moving on, flooding issues are expected to persist. It can take hours or even days for floodwaters to recede, depending on their depth. Residents are urged to remain cautious and vigilant as the aftermath of the heavy rainfall continues to impact the region.
