Flares injure child and footballer after 'protesters' target Bury AFC cup match

A child spectator and a footballer have been injured after 'protesters' launched flares into Bury AFC's ground during an FA Cup qualifier. Officers are appealing for witnesses following the incident at the Neuven Stadium, in Radcliffe, at around 1pm today (September 3).

Greater Manchester Police says it received reports that a group of male protesters outside were throwing flares inside the stadium, during Bury AFC's fixture with North Shields. The flares caused minor injuries to both a player and a child spectator.

A heavy police presence remains in the area following the fixture, which kicked off at 12.30pm. Enquiries are ongoing to identify the people involved.

Chief Inspector Samantha Goldie, of GMP Bury Division, said: "Whilst we anticipate protests taking place and facilitate them where possible, we absolutely do not tolerate violence. This is a public event and ultimately we want everyone to be safe and have an enjoyable time.

"Thankfully this reckless and dangerous action by a few did not result in serious injury. We are keen to speak to anyone who might have more information that could help identify those involved. If you witnessed this incident, or have footage, please share it with us as soon as possible."

GMP says it is keen to reassure the community that this is an isolated incident and is not connected to the reports of fireworks being used in an anti-social manner elsewhere in Bury. Families in the Fishpool area told the Manchester Evening News earlier this week they had been 'terrorised' by a gang of youths hurling fireworks at their homes.

Bury AFC beat North Shields 2-1 in their FA Cup first qualifying round fixture earlier today. Anyone with information about the incident with flares is urged to contact GMP on 0161 856 8181, quoting incident number 1415 of September 3, 2022, or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
