Five youths arrested after 'knifepoint robbery' at Metrolink stop

Five youths have been arrested after a 'knifepoint robbery' at a Metrolink stop. Police were called to Dane Road in Sale at about 10pm on Saturday following the mugging.

One witness reported seeing up to 14 police cars at the scene. Another said officers arrived at the incident 'within minutes'.

A statement on the GMP Trafford South Facebook page said: "Residents and persons enjoying the weekend at Sale will have noticed a large police presence. This is in response to a knife point robbery at Dane Metrolink stop.

"Five juvenile males have been arrested in response to this incident by GMP Transport Unit and Trafford Response. There are no outstanding offenders.

"The investigation is in very early stages and an update will be given when able."

It's the latest of several incidents of knife crime on the Metrolink network in recent weeks. Earlier this month police said they were stepping up enforcement in a bid to reassure passengers.

Officers are thought to be stopping around 300 people a month on public transport in the region, with 25 per cent of those searched found carrying knives or drugs

As reported in the Manchester Evening News, three males were arrested and charged following reports of knife-point robberies at the tram stop in Failsworth. A 34-year-old man was then stabbed at the Market Street Metrolink stop in the city-centre on January 8.

There were further reports of a group of youths being threatened with a knife at Radcliffe tram stop, and in a separate incident, a bus driver being threatened with a knife in Bury.

Chief Supt Mark Dexter (Kenny Brown | Manchester Evening News)

In December the GMP Transport Unit, who regularly patrol the network in plain clothes, made 12 arrests for carrying knives across the network. Chief Supet Mark Dexter told the Manchester Evening News: "We are stopping around two to three hundred people a month on the transport network and we are recovering some sort of criminal item from 25 per cent of those, whether that be knives or drugs, so we will get to you.

"Be aware there are about 4,000 cameras on this network, so we will use those cameras to find you, arrest you and charge you. I understand people's concerns (about the issue), and we have dedicated resources on the transport network.

"We have the dedicated transport units and call on resources from the specialist operations branch, drawing in officers from the tactical aid unit to provide more visibility across the network. We use sniffer dogs and the servator tactic to disrupt criminality."
