Five times Max Verstappen has furiously slammed F1 rivals after George Russell "d***head" blast

It wasn't the first time Max Verstappen has taken aim at an F1 rival, and it certainly won't be the last.

In a frustrating weekend for the two-time world champion, an ill-timed safety car cost him dear as he lost out on another Grand Prix win to teammate Sergio Perez. But the real talking point surrounding the Red Bull star took place after the Saturday sprint race, when he launched into a tirade at Mercedes man George Russell.

The pair had collided early on, with Verstappen, not for the first time in his career, considering himself void of any blame. Mirror Sport looks at five other occasions that a driver felt the wrath of the Dutchman.

Verstappen pushes it with Ocon

Long before he was battling for F1 titles, Verstappen was fighting - quite literally - with the likes of Esteban Ocon.

Back at the 2018 Brazilian Grand Prix, the then 21-year-old was on track for a sixth career win when Ocon, in an audacious bid to unlap himself, made contact with the leader and caused both cars to spin. Verstappen recovered, but only after Lewis Hamilton had come through to take lead he never relinquished.

Afterwards, a raving Verstappen forcibly pushed Ocon several times in the chest, with the Frenchman returning the compliment. He was duly ordered to serve two days of public service after race stewards ruled he 'started an altercation' with the Force India driver.

Perez punished for Monaco crash

If Verstappen's squabbles with rival drivers are to be expected for a man with a fiery temper, his 2023 feud with teammate Perez left F1 enthusiasts stunned.

And again, Interlagos was the venue. The Mexican had played a major hand in helping Verstappen to the title the previous season, and with the Championship already wrapped up this time around, you'd have thought team orders to give up his place to Perez - who was battling Charles Leclerc for second overall - would amount to little more than a minor inconvenience.

Not so. Verstappen refused, saying over team radio: “I told you already last time, you guys don't ask that again to me, OK? Are we clear about that? I gave my reasons and I stand by it.” The beef seemingly dated back to Monaco earlier in the season, with Verstappen believing Perez deliberately crashed in qualifying to prevent him from making a late tilt at pole.

Firing back at Felipe Massa

Whilst publicity around Verstappen has inevitably risen in recent years, worth nothing he was still a teenager driving for Scuderia Toro Rosso when he first started getting in spats.

Back in 2015, he was penalised for a high-speed collision with Romain Grosjean in Monaco, an incident which led to criticism from Williams driver Felipe Massa. He described Verstappen's driving as "pretty dangerous" and cited his lack of experience.

Rather than show contrition, Verstappen instead fought his corner, and angrily hit back at Massa by referencing the Brazilian's own crash at the same venue the previous season: "Maybe you should review the race from last year and see what happened there," he told him.

Hamilton hammered of the track in Monza

When it comes to fallouts, the 2021 title race between Verstappen and Hamilton is probably worthy of its own series, but the disdain between the pair lingered long before the dubious finish of Abu Dhabi.

Hamilton had already been deemed responsible for ending Verstappen's race at Silverstone, but the tables were turned in Italy when the Red Bull car launched off a ramped curb at Monza and onto the top of Hamilton's Mercedes, with only the protective Halo device preventing him from serious injury.

But the eventual title winner was more concerned with arguing injustice than he was of Hamilton's narrow escape: "That's what happens when you don't leave any room," he ranted via team radio to his Red Bull team, before storming back to the pit lane.

Verstappen lambasts old rival Leclerc

Verstappen and Leclerc have a rivalry that dates back to their younger days, when the pair would go hammer and tongs at each other on the karting tracks.

And the old feud was reignited in Japan in 2019, when a great start from Verstappen was scuppered when he was tagged in Turn 2 by the Ferrari man. It resulted in a DNF for the young prodigy, not to mention an angry outburst when he got out of his car.

“I like hard racing, but I don’t think this was hard racing,” he shouted. “This was just irresponsible driving into Turn 2."
