Henry Shefflin has made the first big call of his Galway tenure by appointing Daithí Burke as captain for this year.
Galway begin their 2022 Allianz Hurling League campaign at Pearse Stadium against Offaly on Sunday and Shefflin believes five-time AllStar Burke is the right man to lead his panel after a bumpy start in the Walsh Cup that saw the Tribe beat Offaly and Antrim but lose heavily to Dublin.
Burke, who played in Galway's SHC All-Ireland triumph in 2017, has lined out 38 times for the county since he made his debut eight years ago.
The 29-year-old full-back takes over the captaincy from Padraic Mannion. He previously skippered Turloughmore to the county final in 2020.
Sarsfields' Joe Cooney will be the Tribe's vice captain and he also is a veteran of that 2017 All-Ireland success.
Wing-back Cooney, 30, made his Galway debut a decade ago and has played 44 times for the county.
