Five simple ways to keep spiders out of your home

Summer's almost over and spider season is rapidly creeping upon us. And those less fond of the eight-legged invaders may be desperate to keep them out of their homes.

Spiders do not just head inside to get cosy for the autumn; they are reaching full maturity and looking for a quiet corner to meet a mate. They leave cobwebs and of course, there is always the dreadful possibility that one ends up in a shoe, or a bed.

According to estate agents Douglas and Gordon, internet searches for ‘how to stop spiders coming in’ have increased by 350%. So the firm has put together five to help arachnophobes keep the critters out this autumn.

Lemon

Spiders do not like citrus. Grab the peel of a lemon or lime and rub it along windowsills, door frames, cracks, or pretty much anywhere you might think a spider would make its way inside. To make the process easier, you can also mix the juice into a spray bottle with a little bit of water and spray it in the same areas.

Seal cracks and gaps

This one is a bit more tedious, but if you really want to cover your bases, go down to the DIY store and grab a couple tubes of sealant. Use it to fill in any cracks in the floor, baseboards, corners, windowsills, or even in the ceiling.

If it is more difficult to get in, spiders are likely to move on to somewhere else. This method might be the most work, but it is also the most effective way to keep spiders out.

Tidy up

Clutter can be an ideal place for a spider to set up shop. Since spiders do not really eat food and crumbs left sitting around, they enter homes searching for a place to put up their webs. Therefore, those who keep homes tidy are less likely to see a spider when theyopen that dodgy cupboard door or dig through a pile of bags in the garage.

Conkers

While this may not be scientifically proven like citrus, there’s an old wives’ tale that placing conkers along window sills and in the corners of room will keep spiders away.

Spider catcher

It does not prevent spiders coming into your home, but it is useful to have around when you see one. You will avoid killing the spiders and keeping spiders alive is helpful when trying to keep other insects out of your home. Also, when you get rid of spiders you take away the opportunity for them to mate and nest which will prevent more.
