Five places for the perfect scenic picnic in Co Derry

Who doesn’t love a good picnic? The sun is shining and you’ve got a full basket of beautiful food, treats and maybe even some bubbly.

But where to roll out your blanket? Derry has some great picnic spots for a day out with the family.

So fill up your hamper and visit one of these five picnic spots in Derry City and beyond.

Brooke Park

Brooke Park is an historic landmark within the city that includes eight hectares of public park space located within the city centre. It's the perfect place to sit and relax with the family, giving you park facilities for the kids nearby.

There are benches scattered throughout the park offering visitors beautiful scenic views of the city centre.

Ness Woods

The Country Park in the Waterside area of Derry is 55 hectares of mixed woodland along with open parkland which extends along both sides of the Burntollet River.

There is over 7km of stunning woodland and riverside walks including a magnificent waterfall walk. For the less able visitors, there is also a meadow walk which offers easy access walking.

Creggan Country Park

Celebrating 30 years this year, the award-winning 100-acre Creggan Country Park is host to three freshwater lakes, woodland, hedgerow, wildflower meadows and activity centre.

It can be found on the outskirts of Derry, just to the west of the city in the Creggan area.

Culmore Country Park

This beautiful country park opened in 2016 after a £7m restoration project at the former landfill site, off Coney Road.

Looking over parts of Lough Foyle, It boasts over 3kms of pathways with stunning views as far as Moville in Con Donegal and Binevenagh on a clear day.

The entire site is 40 hectares, which includes 13 hectares of tidal lagoons and 27 hectares of parkland, the equivalent of almost 40 full-size football pitches.

St Columb's Park

The 70-acre park be accessed from Ebrington and has a direct pedestrian cycle path that connects to both the Peace Bridge and Gransha Park.

Within the grounds of the park you will find beautiful wooded walkways, benches and parks making it perfect for families.
