The Mexican state of Tabasco experienced a violent start to 2025. Five people were killed and seven others injured in a Villahermosa bar on Saturday night, while state authorities reported five additional homicides across various municipalities on the same day.

An armed group targeted a bar known as "La Casita Azul" in the neighborhood of Tamulté, per a report from Infobae. The attackers entered the bar at around 9 p.m. and opened fire at a group of people.

Local authorities, supported by federal and state forces, launched an operation to locate the assailants immediately after the attack. No arrests have been reported since Sunday.

The State Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation to identify the victims and perpetrators. Separately, five other homicides were reported in Tabasco on the same day, in various municipalities.

Videos on social media showed the aftermath, including injured individuals and the security operation at the scene. The Revolutionary Institutional Party (PRI) went on X to comment on the incident, saying "local authorities are overwhelmed, and it's costing lives," urging the federal government to intervene in the state. "Enough is enough," they added.

Former gubernatorial candidate Lorena Beaurregard criticized Governor Javier May for his perceived inaction amid the escalating violence. According to the National Security Commission, Tabasco recorded 10 homicides in the first three days of 2025.
