Five hospitalised as car ploughs into crowd outside club in Freshers’ week horror

Five people have been injured after a car ploughed into a group of students celebrating Freshers’ Week outside a nightclub in Birmingham in a “targeted” attack.

Police were called to The Tunnel Club on Livery Street at around 3am on Friday to reports of disorder involving a group.

They discovered five men with injuries, with one treated by ambulance crews for “multiple serious injuries” and taken to a major trauma centre.

Four other men were treated by medics for “potentially serious injuries” and taken to hospital for further treatment.

The club had been hosting an event for Freshers Week, according to their website.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of affray and remains in custody.

Police are still searching for the driver of the vehicle.

One local told the Mirror that they had overheard shouting in the early hours of the morning.

They said: “I heard shrieks, fighting and general ranting and raving for about half an hour, which is uncommon at that time of night.

“It's really shocking what has happened. It would have been busy around there last night.”

Another local claimed to have seen a man “running people over in the street”.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “We are treating this incident as a targeted attack and are stepping up our patrols in the area today for reassurance.

“We are asking anyone who saw what happened, especially those with photos or video, to get in touch with us via 101 or Live Chat quoting log 315 of 4 October.”
