Five figure sum raised in memory of dedicated Co Tyrone nurse taken by cancer

A dedicated Co Tyrone nurse who died suddenly last year from an aggressive form of cancer has had more than £10,000 raised in her memory.

Anne McCarney, from Drumnakilly near Omagh , worked as a nurse in the neo-natal unit at the South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen for 16 years before her untimely passing aged just 46.

To mark Anne’s first anniversary, a group of her colleagues organised a series of fundraising efforts, including a memory walk and a number of raffles. The funds raised will now go towards the Palliative Care ward in Omagh and Children in Crossfire.

Joan Cunningham, a colleague of Anne’s in the neo-natal unit, described her as a ‘dedicated nurse. She added that her death was an awful shock for everyone.

“Anne was a staff nurse who worked at the neo natal unit at the South West Acute Hospital,” Joan told Belfast Live.

“We had worked with her for the last sixteen years in the unit. She was just 46, a young girl who was very kind and compassionate.

“She loved helping everybody and loved looking after the babies. Anne took ill with a really aggressive cancer and died within nine weeks.

“There was no real warning that it was coming. For her family and her colleagues it was an awful shock for everyone.

“She was a really dedicated nurse. Her work and her family - that was her life.

“We have tight knit wee team here in the neo-natal unit and it was something we wanted to do to remember Anne.”

Joan added that the fundraising efforts went to show what her colleagues thought of Anne

“There was a great team effort from the girls at work. They all came together and it was something we wanted to do to mark Anne’s first anniversary.

“We had a memory walk for Anne and we had a raffle for which we had 50 prizes donated from different businesses around Fermanagh and Tyrone.”
