What’s new: Five Chinese nationals were among seven people killed in a mass shooting in northern California’s Half Moon Bay, China’s consulate in San Francisco confirmed Thursday.
Monday’s shooting happened on two farms in the small coastal city. It was the second of three gun attacks in the state in the past week, which claimed a total of 19 lives. The Half Moon Bay shooting also left one person seriously injured.
“We strongly condemn this incident of gun violence and would like to express our deep condolences to the victims and sincere sympathy to the injured and their families,” the Chinese consulate said in a statement.
The consulate is communicating with the relevant U.S. authorities to “follow up on the progress of the case investigation.”
The remaining two dead and the sole survivor of the Half Moon Bay shooting are Mexican nationals, Mexico’s consulate in San Francisco said on Tuesday.
The background: The lone suspect in the attack, identified by authorities as 67-year-old immigrant farm worker Zhao Chunli, was formally charged with premeditated murder during his first court appearance in nearby Redwood City on Wednesday, Reuters reported.
The incident occurred just two days after 11 people, including at least one Chinese national, were shot and killed on Lunar New Year’s Eve at a dance club in Monterey Park, a majority Asian-American city in Los Angeles county. Another shooting on Monday in Oakland left one person dead and seven injured, according to local police.
