The Premier League has had another dramatic transfer window, but rather than consign it to the past and get on with the season at hand, we’re addressing the season’s burning question: In 30 years of Premier League football, who is the greatest transfer of all time?
It is a testament to Chelsea’s position as a force of Premier League nature that five of the 30 nominations belong to the Blues. That those five are Frank Lampard, Eden Hazard, Didier Drogba, Ashley Cole and Gianfranco Zola should come as no shock.
Lampard’s incomprehensible ability to create (102 League assists) nearly as much as he scored (177 League goals) in a Chelsea shirt is still difficult to grasp. 'Legend' is a tag bandied about with cavalier whim nowadays, but Lampard gave the word substance.

Yet, Drogba’s ultimate winner’s mentality (not to mention 104 League goals) has arguably never been more sorely missed. Hazard on the ball was, quite frankly, the stuff of dreams, while Zola’s indelible finesse in a Premier League era defined by various degrees of brute force speaks for itself.
Still, for manifold reasons, Cole might just edge his counterparts. Already dripping in the fevered drama of absconding to a London rival, the spectacle was compounded with the meagre £5million (and William Gallas) required to lure away one of the world’s top left-backs. Six trophies later, Cole wasn’t just a bargain but a bonafide transfer GOAT contender.
