Frightening images taken on what appears to be a mobile phone circulated on social media following the incident.

The footage shows a man in a grey T-shirt walking along a footpath carrying a stick with others running slowly behind him. A number of men jump out from a moving silver car carrying weapons and run after the man.

He runs across the road in the other direction but is soon caught by three men all carrying baseball bats. They beat the man to the ground and continue to hit him, before they are joined by a fourth man and two women.

The man in the grey T-shirt repeatedly stamps on the victim who is now lying on the ground and not fighting back.

Gardai said: “A male, 40, was injured in the incident and brought to the Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore for treatment of his injuries.

Investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
